Love Madison County, My Home

Body
In the local museum, we offer a little blue book for sale. It’s about the size of a Reader’s Digest magazine and, in my opinion, worth it’s weight in gold, though we sell it for only $10. It was compiled in 2004 for the Madison County Sesquicentennial (150th birthday), which had occurred the year before the book came out.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Body
Dear Editor, This past August makes three years since I retired and moved here to Madison County, Texas. I didn’t move here because of the Madisonville ISD ratings or employment. The main reason was for the family and friends I have here. I enjoy reading the Madisonville Meteor newspaper weekly. I would like to point out that at the top right-hand corner of the front page, under the Madisonville Meteor, it says “Thank a Veteran and Serviceman Every Day.” I am a proud Air Force veteran and usually wear something that states that fact. The point of this article is that the three years living here, and going about my daily life, I cannot count on one hand the number people who have thanked me for my service to this great country. This makes me wonder how many veterans in this community are not recognized for their military contributions. If you didn’t serve, it doesn’t mean anything to you. But to those of us who did, a simple thank you means a great deal. Just something to consider, especially since it is on the front page of the paper, every week.

Texas residents urged to get flu shot

Body
Flu season is underway, and health officials are urging Texans to get their vaccinations as soon as possible, since it takes about two weeks for the shot to take effect. “Because influenza can be a very serious disease, we recommend that all individuals aged 6 months and older get their flu vaccine every year,” said Dr. Jennifer Shuford, interim commissioner for the Texas Department of State Health Services. “The flu vaccines for the 2022-2023 flu season have undergone substantial changes since last season, which will allow them to better protect against the flu viruses that are currently circulating,” she said. “So it is important to go get this season’s flu vaccine before flu activity increases even more in Texas.” People over the age of 65 have a choice of three recommended higher-dose flu vaccines, which are considered more effective for this age group. People can also safely get a COVID-19 vaccine or booster at the same time they get the infl uenza vaccine, Shuford said.

NEWS OF THE WEIRD

LEAD STORY -- HOLDING A GRUDGE! A family is seeking to press charges against an unnamed man who was briefly married to their mom in the 1970s, the New York Post reported. Their beef? Allegedly, the New Jersey man arrives at Linda Torello’s tombstone in Orangetown, New York, early almost every morning with his current wife in tow, where he urinates on her grave and sometimes leaves a bag of excrement.

State sends resources to Florida

Body
Texas has deployed state resources to Florida to assist in response and recovery efforts in the aftermath of the devastation caused last week by Hurricane Ian, one of the most powerful storms to hit the United States in the past decade. “Texans understand the urgency of hurricane disaster response and recovery efforts, and our state is swiftly sending more support and resources to Florida as they continue responding to Hurricane Ian,” Gov. Greg Abbott said.
