Recently at the Museum I found several printed pages stapled together, and I do not know when they arrived at the Museum or how. The title reads “Store Money or Store Tokens, the First Credit Card”, by Tom Rhodes. I had an uncle by marriage, Thomas Rhodes, but he died in 1986. I’d bet a hundred bucks he wasn’t the author of the piece in question, and I’m ignorant as to who this Tom Rhodes is or was. The papers appear much newer than 1986 and it’s my guess they are the product of a modern computer and printer, and fairly recent. The pages show no sign of age and could have been generated yesterday! I’m sharing the piece next but with an insert near the end of some other local history.

It’s official. Fort Hood, named for a high-ranking Confederate officer in the Civil War, has been renamed Fort Cavazos, in honor of native Texan Richard E. Cavazos, the country’s first Hispanic four-star general.

If you look at a map of Texas counties, you will probably agree with me that Madison County is one of the smaller ones. It covers 472.4 square miles, more than the smallest, Rockwall, with 148.7 square miles. Madison is fourteenth smallest of 254.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is proposing to construct a new relief route located south of the City of Madisonville designated as State Loop 1853 in Madison County. TxDOT will be conducting a public hearing on the proposed project on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, from 4:30 p.m.

Madisonville Chamber of Commerce Coordinator Liz Ward has bid farewell after eight years of dedicated service to the town’s business community. Ward’s decision to retire was influenced by her desire to spend more quality time with her husband following the departure of her last child from high school.

Local Madisonville Native is Nearing a Goal!

Sarah Bankhead has always felt the lure of medicine as a profession. With her paternal grandfather, an anesthesiologist, she knew early on that there were different ways to help people through medicine. Being smart, she wanted to be sure she found the field that fit her best. In high school, she studied for and received her certified nursing assistant license to explore if healthcare might be a good fit for her future.

Recently the Bill Tom Shine Street signs here have been nagging me. The street runs east to west between North Madison and North May (Highway 75) and passes just north of the Madisonville Post Office. Because of it, I chose as my next subject Bill Tom and his parents, Billye and Tommy Shine. The following information comes from essays written by Bill Tom, including one for the 1984 book on local history and two for the 1997 volume. I have NOT copied word-for-word and have trimmed them down some, or I’d have wounded up with more than the Meteor would want.
