After a long and arduous debate process between Major League Baseball officials and players that left diehard baseball fans reeling throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the two sides have finally reached an agreement to begin an abbreviated, 60-game regular season in late July, which will be followed by the traditional postseason format in October. Personnel began reporting to a makeshift “spring training” period to prepare for the season at the beginning of the month. more

Funeral services for Jeffery Stringer, 64, of Madisonville will be held 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Madisonville, Texas. President Gary Grubbs will officiate the service. The Stringer family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at Madisonville Funeral Home in Madisonville. Mr. Stringer will later be laid to rest in Memorial Park Cemetery in Las Vegas, NV. more

Freddie Jo “Jody” Sharp Merchant was born in Houston, TX on November 23, 1942 and passed away on May 29, 2020 at the Huntsville Memorial Hospital in Huntsville, TX. Jody was the daughter of Fred Herman Sharp and Rachel Lorene Dickey Sharp. She grew up in Madisonville and graduated from Madisonville High School. She met and married James Merchant, also from Madisonville, on April 14, 1962. They moved away briefly a couple of times, but came back home to Madisonville and raised their three children. Jody worked several jobs ranging from operating a full service gas station that she and James owned, to a legal secretary for Roger Knight, Sr. and Jr. In the 1990’s they moved to Willis and then to New Waverly where she worked and retired from UTMB/TDCJ. She continued to work full time operating a hotshot trucking business that she and James had started in 1997. After his passing she continued running the business with her son Russell until her passing. She always enjoyed taking a trip to Louisiana to the casinos, but only playing the nickel slots. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She so enjoyed spending time with her grandson, Brit. He could really get her jumping! more
Ronald Lee Jones was born August 12, 1952 in Houston, Texas. His parents were Gene Calvin, Sr. & Frances Marie (Johnston) Jones. Ronald worked as a welding supervisor at Hughes Christensen for twenty-five years. more
Funeral services for Billi Huff, 56, were held 11 A.M., Monday, June 29, 2020 at Madisonville Funeral Home in Madisonville, Texas. Bro. Bo Gunnels officiated the service. Interment followed in Allphin Cemetery in Midway, Texas. more
Mary Ann Gail, a lifetime resident of Madisonville, passed away unexpectedly on June 24th, 2020 at her home. She was born to Thurman and Cora Vesta Colquitt on November 8, 1941 in Leon County. Mary Ann is survived by two siblings, Betty Kelly (Bo) of Madisonville, Mike Colquitt (Jacquelyn) of Magnolia. She also leaves behind three sons, John NeSmith (Tammy), Darren NeSmith (Cindy), and Todd Gail. Mary Ann was blessed with 5 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Being an avid reader, Mary Ann often finished books in a days’ time, sending Todd back to the library for more mysteries. She liked working word search and puzzle books also. In earlier years Mary Ann worked for numerous businesses around Madisonville like the Corral Café and Carters grocery store. Later in life Mary Ann lovingly cared for several elderly residents of Madisonville. She was greatly loved and will be missed by family and friends. more
