Madisonville CISD students Mauricio Aceves and Garrett Johnson celebrated the continuation of their athletic careers at the next level with family, friends and coaches in the MCISD board room on Wednesday.

“There are really no words for this,” said Aceves. “Just a big thank you to everybody who came today because it means a lot. I came from Arizona and it was like a whole different atmosphere here but everybody was just amazing.”

Aceves will play football at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor while Johnson competes in football and track at Texas Lutheran University.

“(My family) has been here for the whole ride, they have always supported me through thick and thin,” said Johnson. “Playing two sports is going to be a job but I just need to stay focused and remember why I am there. I have not been in Madisonville long but the relationships I have made with people made all of it worth it.”

Head football and track Coach Russell Urbantke shared stories of the work ethic of the two players before they introduced their families to the crowd. Aceves and Johnson took pictures with their families in attendance as well as most of the Madisonville football team.

Two cakes were also prepared in honor of the new collegiate destinations and consumed after the ceremony along with beverages.
