Aceves punts for East Texas Baptist

Mauricio Aceves has been recognized for his football performance as a punter for East Texas Baptist University.

The Madisonville High School graduate was named to the all-American Southwest Conference honorable mention team. He was among two East Texas Baptist University freshmen to be cited, the lone named as a specialist.

Aceves shared punting duties with a senior, averaging 38.5 yards on 17 punts.

"I wasn't too happy," Aceves said about his average. “It is something to start off with."

His season-long punt was 49 yards and he landed three punts inside the 20-yard line.

He said his duties will increase next year.

“They are going to have me doing kickoffs," he said. "I'm really looking forward to it."

Offseason conditioning is under way. Aceves said he is lifting weights three days a week and doing cardio training two days a week.

Men's basketball

Sophomore starter Tommy Holiday led Concordia University Texas with nine rebounds, which matched his season high, against Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Madisonville product led the team with his season high of three steals and had 13 points in the loss.

Softball

Lexi Harris is no longer on the Blinn College roster. The Normangee graduate batted .333 in 25 games as a freshman utility player last year.

Women's basketball

During a win over Delaware State, Longwood University junior Tra'dayja Smith led players from both teams with seven assists. The Madisonville alumna added nine points and seven rebounds.

Centenary College of Louisiana freshman Jazzmyn Jones had six points against Mississippi University for Women. The Normangee graduate had six rebounds and a season-high two blocked shots.

Baseball

Past Mustang Jake Risinger is a freshman catcher for Southwestern Christian University (Okla.).

Men's track and field

Former Mustang Garrett Johnson is a freshman for Texas Lutheran University.
