The Madisonville golf team won the regional tournament as a team and Sam Bennett won it individually for the fourth straight year at the Raven Nest Country Club in Huntsville.
Despite tough field conditions, the Mustangs combined for a total score of 327 after the first day to build a 12-stroke lead over Gatesville and a 17-stroke lead over Huffman and Robinson.
“I was thrilled for these seniors,” said Madisonville golf coach Russell Smith. “These three have qualified for state every year, which says a lot about their former coaches. For (Sam) to win it four times is nothing short is spectacular.”
Gatesville as well as Liberty Hill would make a strong push for Madisonville on day two, but the Mustangs were able to hold them off to earn the Region 3 4A championship by a total of eight strokes.
The course had a par of 71 and Bennett was able to shoot just that on both days to post the best finish out of any of his fellow golfers. All told, there were a total of 113 golfers in Huntsville.
Brylen Mills finished eighth at regionals with scores of 81 and 83 while Ben Phillips was 30th. Bryce Bennett and Jordan Prescott finished tied for 37th on the weekend while Brandon Larson, who picked up the sport less than a year ago, impressed by finishing 71st.
This was the fifth tournament the Madisonville golf team has won outright this season and they will now advance to state. The state tournament will take place on May 14 and 15 in Marble Falls at Apple Rock Golf Course in Horseshoe Bay.
“(Apple Rock) is a tough course and one of the most difficult we will play all year,” said Smith. “We have competed in multiple 6A tournaments throughout the season, so I know we’re ready. We just need to stay in the moment.”
