Bulldogs conclude season at home

The North Zulch Bulldogs basketball team was eliminated at NZHS on Friday with a 53-46 loss to Burton in a win-or-go-home play-in contest in front of their home fans.

“I feel the kids did a great job adjusting to a new coach and a new system this year,” said North Zulch basketball coach Matt Kirschner, who concludes his first season at the helm of the program. “We were in a position to get into the playoffs. This was a very inexperienced team and they showed a lot of growth and heart throughout the season.”

North Zulch kept their hopes alive last Tuesday with a 41-37 victory at home over Somerville. This was Senior Night for five North Zulch players. Eli Juarez, Austin Meloy, Avery Broussard, Peyton Wolfe, Aaron Ringer and Andres Garcia were honored on the court before the game.

“The senior did a great job of leading the underclassmen,” said Kirschner. “We have laid the groundwork and foundation for a successful future.”

The Bulldogs led Friday’s critical matchup by a score of 34-31 entering the final quarter of play. Burton, however, outscored North Zulch 22-12 in the final eight minutes to come away with the victory on the road.

Carson Radde and Tyler Kirschner led the way in scoring for the Bulldogs with nine points apiece. Peyton Wolfe was right behind them with eight points of his own and Kaleb Douga added seven.

Burton went on to play Somerville on Saturday in the final play-in game of the season with the winner advancing to the playoffs.
