The North Zulch Bulldogs basketball team split a pair of home matchups over the week with a win over St. Joseph’s last Tuesday and a loss to Kerens on Friday.
After Friday’s loss, the Bulldogs had a whole week off to prepare for a couple more non-district regular season games and a tournament. They will play just one game in a two week span with the district slate right around the corner.
“I feel like we have just run a gauntlet of a schedule,” said North Zulch men’s basketball Coach Matt Kirschner. “We have played many teams with larger enrollments than us and many that are more athletic than us. We will need some time to get back in the gym to practice. The long breaks will allow us to work on our skill development and also refine some of the things we are trying to do in preparation for district play.”
Last Tuesday at NZHS, the Bulldogs held St. Joe’s to just 31 points and cruised to a 23-point victory. North Zulch used a big, 19-point third quarter to run away with the game and held St. Joe’s to just two points in the first and four in the third.
Kaleb Douga led the way for the Bulldogs with 13 points in the game. Peyton Wolfe closely followed this total with 11 points of his own while Carson Radde and Tyler Kirschner each added 7.
On Friday night against Kerens, the Bulldogs were edged in a higher-scoring affair by a score of 78-71. North Zulch appeared to be in favorable shape but surrendered 30 points in the final quarter to succumb to the road opponent. Still, the Bulldogs kept pace throughout with 25 points of their own in the final frame.
Tyler Kirschner posted 20 points to lead the way for North Zulch and was followed closely by Wolfe with 19. Stephen Harris added 10 points of his own in the loss.
The Bulldogs are back at it on Friday at 3:15 p.m. with a home matchup against Cross Roads and will participate in a tournament in Latexo on Dec. 28 and 29.
District play will begin on Jan. 11 with a road matchup in Normangee.
