Bulldogs to host early-season tournament

The North Zulch men’s basketball team dropped a home contest to Aggieland last Tuesday by a score of 66-41, dropping their record to 1-4 to start the regular season.

“We did not play well, especially early,” said North Zulch men’s basketball Coach Matt Kirschner. “We struggled early against the press, got down and could not recover. Once we figured out the press, we had dug ourselves a hole we could not get out of.”

The Bulldogs are a much more inexperienced team than they were a season ago and are still gathering experience at the higher level. All told, only a handful of players had any experience on Varsity entering the season.

Freshman Emory Broussard led the way for North Zulch in scoring with 13 points. Senior Austin Meloy followed him with 9 while senior Peyton Wolfe led the way in rebounds. Turnovers plagued the Bulldogs all night.

The women’s team, meanwhile, picked up a pair of decisive victories over McDade and Calvert before Thanksgiving break. At McDade, the Lady Bulldogs incredibly surrendered just two buckets in a 79-4 road win.

North Zulch blew the doors open in the first quarter and jumped out to a 28-0 lead to set the tone for the remainder of the game. That theme would continue throughout the night as the Lady Bulldogs posted at least 15 points in in every quarter for the blowout win.

Senior Megan Massey led the way in scoring with 17 points. She was closely followed by Kaitlyn Douga and Lakin Maddin with 14. Every player on the North Zulch roster recorded at least one bucket in the win. Madison Murphy topped the charts with seven boards and Katelyn Crocker led in assists.

The following night, the Lady Bulldogs would travel to Calvert and collect another win by a score of 54-24. Douga posted 18 points to lead the team and was closely followed by Massey with 13 and Murphy with 11. The win gave the Lady Bulldogs a strong record of 4-1 to start play in 2018 under Coach Michael Stenseth.

Both squads were back in action on Tuesday, but North Zulch will welcome a number of teams to their gym to host a tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Thursday, the men’s team will compete against Richards and Lovelady while the women battle Cornerstone and Brazos Christian.

On Friday, the men’s team will face New Waverly and St. Joe’s while the Lady Bulldogs play St. Joe’s and Alpha Omega. Saturday’s matchups will depend on the results of the action on Thursday and Friday.

A number of teams will compete in the tournament and both the main and auxiliary gyms will be used.
