Madisonville’s 15 FFA judging teams concluded their four months of study and practice in April with 12 of the squads advancing to state competitions, which took place in five different locations.
“We had a fantastic semester and the judging teams represented our school very well,” said FFA coordinator Lynita Foster on the results. “Our kids proved they can hold their own among the best. We thank God for blessing them and watching over all of us while we traveled.”
The Tractor Technician team was the first to perform in a state contest at the Houston Livestock Show on March 11. The team earned 20th in state overall and consisted of Garrett Long, Dawson Staley and Rusty Theiss.
On April 21, the Entomology competed at Texas Tech University and earned 7th place in state. Team members were Morgan Manning, Cheo Reyes, Mia Caperton and Cheyanne Snook.
Five judging teams represented Madisonville at the state events at Tarelton State on April 26. The Dairy Cattle team, consisting of Joey McIver, Cody Cole, Bradley Longoria, Madi Caperton and Ashlyn Johnson, finished 40th in state. Taylor Barrett, Kasey Long, Cesar Rosas and Luke Nelson of the Land team earned 36th in state.
The Homesite team finished 25th in state and featured Austin Longoria, Blake, Georg, Garrett Underwood and Madi Caperton. Lilly Goodwin, Carlie Stubblefield, Riley Pitcock, Stacy Fowler and Courtnee Wallace of the Milk Quality placed 33rd. The Range team finished 40th and featured Guillermo Rosas, Whitney Anderson and Emily Alvarado.
Four more Madisonville teams competed at Sam Houston State University on April 27. The Forage team and members Morgan Manning, Kacelyn Jarrell, Ethan Williams, Ashlyn Johnson and Emilie Blakley finished 10th in state. Yadira Fernandez, Mariana Cisneros, Cindy Rodriguez and Sindy Jimenez represented the Floral team and placed 20th.
The Ag Sales team finished 25th at Sam Houston and consisted of Brinna Simms, Colby Shepherd and Joey McIver. The Marketing Plan team earned fourth and featured Morgan Manning, Mia Caperton and Averie Sims. The last state event for judging was held on April 28 at Texas A&M. The Poultry team was the lone squad representing Madisonville and finished 38th with members Cody Cole, Evie Rickard, Maddi Kelso and Gabe Coleman.
With the conclusion of judging meant the beginning of public speaking contest season. Nine individuals represented Madisonville, one in each event, during the district convention in Crockett on May 1.
All nine Madisonville students earned second place or higher and will compete in the Area competitions on Monday. Second place finishers were Whitney Anderson in Ag Policy, Brinna Simms in Natural Resources, Madi Caperton in Ag Technology, Chase McBee in Jr. Prepared Speaking and Joey McIVer in Extemporaneous Speaking.
Top finishers from Crockett were Mia Caperton in Animal Science, Morgan Manning in Plant Science, Aly Ghormley in Ag Business and Averie Sims in Soil and Water Stewardship.
On top of top results from Madisonville FFA, two students ran for advanced office, which required an application, a test, writing prompt, interview and speech before the delegates. Brinna Simms was elected Vice President of the Sam Houston District while Cody Cole came up just short of earning a nomination to advance to an Area office.
