Candidates line in bid for U.S. House seat

Posted

A long list of candidates for the congressional district that includes Madison County will face voters this election season, even while incumbent Kevin Brady of The Woodlands has held the seat for 23 years.

Brady will face two challengers in the Republican primary, after having run unopposed for the nomination in 2018. Brady has faced primary challenges in the past, including a tight 2016 primary that saw him win over Steve Toth with 53% of the vote.

This year, Brady will face petroleum engineer Kirk Osborn of The Woodlands and Army veteran Melissa Esparza-Mathis of Glendale.

He will then face off against either Laura Jones, a Coldspring Realtor, or Elizabeth Hernandez, an accounts payable associate whose home base was not immediately available.

The Eighth CD has long been a Republican stronghold, with only Brady and predecessor Jack Fields holding the office since 1981.

In a press release Friday, Jones said she was inspired to run after moving to Coldspring from Houston and feeling that the rural areas of District Eight lacked representation.

“Congress should be passing bills to assist small-town America with infrastructure development, including attracting quality high-speed internet providers, she said. “The lack of quality high-speed internet limits the types of businesses and jobs communities can attract and keeps existing small businesses from effectively competing with online businesses.”

On her campaign biography Esparza-Mathis identifies Second Amendment rights as a main issue.

“I come from a long line of warriors, and dedicated fighters,” she says in her biography. “As a battle tested warrior, I am prepared and dedicated to fighting for your Constitutional Rights. With solutions to address them. The Second Amendment is crucial and constantly under attack.

The veteran of two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan earned a Bronze Star and a Combat Action Badge during her military service.

Osborn, a Petroleum Engineer from The Woodlands, touts his lack of political background.

“I’m not a politician or a lawyer, just a concerned father and husband.” he says in his official biography.
