The Madison County Commissioners’ Court approved a bit of leniency for the Madisonville Cemetery Association by waiving $571.56 in penalties and interest on a delinquent tax bill.
The association recently purchased land to expand the cemetery, and County Tax Assessor/Collector Karen Lane said the purchase was made with the understanding there was a tax lien on the property.
The lien, Lane said, covered a period of unpaid taxes from 1997 to 2017.
“They’re willing to pay the base tax; they’re just asking for the penalties and interest to be waived,” Lane said. “It will save them about half of what is owed, once the city, county and schools forgive their portions.”
The base tax amount is $1,496.98, but with penalties and interest from the different entities, the tax bill actually is $4,154.99, she said.
Once this is paid, the land will not go back on the tax rolls, as Lane said no taxes are assessed against cemeteries.
Since the former owner hadn’t paid taxes since 1996, County Judge C.E. McDaniel said they weren’t receiving any tax revenue anyway.
The court was unanimous in waiving the costs.
