Freddie Jo “Jody” Sharp Merchant was born in Houston, TX on November 23, 1942 and passed away on May 29, 2020 at the Huntsville Memorial Hospital in Huntsville, TX. Jody was the daughter of Fred Herman Sharp and Rachel Lorene Dickey Sharp. She grew up in Madisonville and graduated from Madisonville High School. She met and married James Merchant, also from Madisonville, on April 14, 1962. They moved away briefly a couple of times, but came back home to Madisonville and raised their three children. Jody worked several jobs ranging from operating a full service gas station that she and James owned, to a legal secretary for Roger Knight, Sr. and Jr. In the 1990’s they moved to Willis and then to New Waverly where she worked and retired from UTMB/TDCJ. She continued to work full time operating a hotshot trucking business that she and James had started in 1997. After his passing she continued running the business with her son Russell until her passing. She always enjoyed taking a trip to Louisiana to the casinos, but only playing the nickel slots. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She so enjoyed spending time with her grandson, Brit. He could really get her jumping!
