John Thomas Williams, 89, of Midway, passed away on Dec. 25, 2018, in Madisonville. Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, at Midway Church of Christ in Midway, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, also at Midway Church of Christ, with the burial to follow at Creek Cemetery in Lovelady. Joel Douget will officiate.
John, known to his family as "Bubber", was born on Dec. 2, 1929, in the Elwood Community in Madison County to Stevie Jethro and Artie Mae (Lenord) Williams. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown. John served his country proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean War serving on The USS Hazelwood and earned the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean War Service Medal. He retired from ARMCO Steel and lived in Midway, where he was an active member of Midway Church of Christ.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, LaDon, Carl and Emmet Williams. He is survived by his wife, Norma (Tucker) Williams; his sister, Pat Anderson; his children, Deborah Matyear, Sheila Mercer, Tanya Bontemps and Tracey Golden; his grandchildren, Michael Mercer, Jason Mercer, David Bontemps, Bryan Matyear, Bradlynn Matyear, Cora Gulley, Robert Winston, Ginny Grubbs, Grace Humbird, and Norma Kelley; his stepchildren, Kirk and Barbie Humbird and Steve and Dela Humbird; his three great-grandchildren; and his two great-great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers are David Bontemps, Bryan Matyear, Ryan Gulley, Winston Humbird, Chris Kelley and Jason Mercer.
