Jones shines in overseas league


The professional basketball career of Joseph Jones lives on internationally.

The Normangee High School graduate signed in March to play for the Beirut Club in the Lebanese League. Through six games, the 32-year-old averaged 11.8 points and 10 rebounds.

Jones led the team with 13 rebounds and had nine points during a quarterfinals Round 2 win April 10. He led the squad with 11 rebounds and added eight points during a Round 3 loss April 13.

He reached double figures in points and rebounds during consecutive games March 27 and March 31, finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds in the latter.

Jones competed for Texas A&M University and played in the NBA Summer League during 2008-09. Since 2009 he has played internationally, including in France, Israel, Spain, Puerto Rico and Iran.

Before joining the Beirut Club, he played for Limoges CSP Elite in the French Pro A, a top tier league. In two games he averaged 4.5 points and 4 rebounds.

Men's rodeo

James Arnold of Sam Houston State University teamed with Charly Crawford to tie for sixth in the team roping at the Clark County rodeo in Nevada. The Madisonville High graduate was first in points for team roping heeler for the Southern Region, according to the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association's latest standings.


Deliah Dodson is no longer on the East Central University team. She is out of Madisonville High.

Men's golf

Concordia University Texas sophomore Logan Young tied for seventh at the West Region Invitation. The Normangee High product shot a 226 (77-72-77) to place second among the Tornados.

Men's outdoor track and field

Stephen F. Austin State University junior Tanner Parks, a Normangee resident, placed 17th in the long jump at the Texas Invitational. His jump was 22 feet, 1 3/4 inches.
