The North Zulch softball team went 3-4 in seven matchups at a tournament in Franklin Thursday through Saturday after defeating Anderson-Shiro 17-5 March 3.

The tournament began with back-to-back shutout losses to host Franklin (8-0) and Navasota (11-0) before bouncing back with victories over Riesel (5-3) and Iola (18-17).

The Lady bulldogs fought back from an early three-run deficit in Thursday’s win over Riesel with five runs in the third and fourth innings.

Kamryn Crocker stole home to put North Zulch on the board in the third before Katelyn Crocker and Shaelynn Keith scored on two passed balls to tie the game at three.

Keith would break the tie in the following inning with a two-RBI single to score Trinitty Wallace and Kamryn Crocker.

Dannicka Diserens logged 0.2 innings and Hailey Pullin finished the final 3.1 innings on the mound.

The North Zulch offense exploded for 18 runs and held off a late Iola comeback effort Friday night to pick up their first win of the tournament. The Lady Bulldogs scored in every inning and scored at least twice in all but the sixth.

Four North Zulch players logged three RBIs in the win, including Katelyn Crocker, Shaelynn Keith, Cheyanne Wallin and Abigail Cervantes. Wallin and Cervantes each recorded a pair of doubles in the win.

With the help of sloppy fielding, Iola was able to score 16 times from the fourth inning on and take a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Tessah Haggard was hit by a pitch to leadoff the seventh and moved into scoring position on a Diserens bunt. Cervantes then knocked her second double of the game into centerfield to tie the game and came around to score the winning run on Katelyn Crocker’s walk-off single.

Pullin pitched all seven frames for North Zulch, overcoming nine earned runs for the win.

The Lady Bulldogs surrendered three runs in the final two innings of their second matchup against Franklin to lose the game 6-5. They overcame an early three-run deficit with four runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead.

Wallin, who drove in a pair of runs in the loss, put the Lady Bulldogs on the board with a two-RBI double in the third. Wallace would drive home another pair later in the inning to double their run total.

Jordan Barrington added an insurance run in the top of the fourth with a single to plate Madison Murphy, but Franklin was able to overcome the deficit late for the win.

In a rematch against Reisel Saturday, North Zulch overcame another large deficit to earn a thrilling victory. After falling behind 7-0, the Lady Bulldogs scored 11 runs in the third and fourth innings to claim a slim, 11-10 win.

Wallin and Cervantes each hit homeruns in the win and led the way with a pair of RBIs along with Pullin. Barrington and Diserens each added triples while Katelyn Crocker knocked a pair of doubles.

North Zulch concluded the tournament Saturday with an 11-4 loss to Cameron.

The Lady Bulldogs resumed their district slate with a matchup in Normangee Tuesday. They are scheduled to host Mumford at NZHS Friday at 6 p.m.
