The Lady Mustangs basketball team fell to 0-5 in district with a 58-50 home loss to Mexia last Tuesday and were off on Friday night.
This was the second loss of the year to Mexia, but it was a much closer effort than the first time around. At Mexia on Jan. 5, the Lady Mustangs fell to the Black Cats 63-41.
Three of the last four Madisonville losses have come by a single-digit deficit as they continue to play better as the season progresses.
Last Tuesday, it was breakout second and fourth quarters that allowed the Black Cats to jump out to a lead at MHS, which carried them the rest of the way. Mexia recorded 45 of their 58 points in these two quarters.
The Lady Mustangs held Mexia to just two points in the third quarter to make up the deficit. Madisonville scored 33 points in the second half, but it was not enough to jump in front of Mexia and their 22 fourth quarter points.
Khyra Cooper led the team in scoring with 18 points and was followed by Jyah Burns and Daiona Johnson with 13 each. Johnson also led the way in assists with seven while Amaya Scott recorded five rebounds.
The Lady Mustangs battled Rusk last night on the road and will finish their district slate against Palestine and Fairfield. Friday’s game against Palestine will take place at MHS.
