Khyra Cooper led the Lady Mustangs in scoring with 19 points in a 43-39 road win at Waco-Connally Dec. 17, Madisonville’s last matchup before competing in the Aggieland Invitational Thursday through Saturday.

Cooper also led the team in rebounds (eight) and steals (five) in the victory. Tra’Shayla Smith and Brianna Johnson each contributed six points while Jerkayla Dickey added four along with three assists and a pair of steals.

The win snapped a three-game losing steak for the Lady Mustangs before their final tournament of the non-district season in Bryan-College Station, which follows a nine-day stretch of days without games.

Madisonville will compete in the Division II bracket in the Aggieland Invitational and battle Hudson in their first game at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Bryan High School. A victory would put them against the winner of Houston Christian and China Spring at 7 p.m. while a loss draws the loser of the same game at 4 p.m. Both matchups would take place at BHS.

This year’s tournament will be the 20th rendition of the Aggieland Invitational, which features 64 women’s high school teams. The Division I bracket is comprised of 5A and 6A schools while Division II features 1A-4A teams. Each team participating in the tournament is guaranteed to compete in at least four matchups.

Host sites for the tournament include BHS, A&M Consolidated High School, College Station High School and Rudder High School.

In 2018, Madisonville split four matchups at Aggieland with victories over Sam Rayburn and Pittsburg and losses to Huckabay and Greenville.

After the tournament, the Lady Mustangs are scheduled to compete in two standalone contests at home against China Spring Jan. 3 and Normangee Jan. 7. They will remain at MHS to begin district play against Mexia Jan. 10.

After Mexia, the Madisonville will travel to Rusk, host Palestine and travel to Fairfield to conclude their first stint of district matchups.
