Lady Mustangs drop home matchup

The Madisonville women’s soccer team dropped a non-district matchup to Livingston at MHS Jan. 20 by a score of 2-0. Their scheduled matchup in Rockdale Friday was canceled due to a scheduling mixup.

“We made a few mistakes early on (against Livingston) and it seemed like we were on the defensive after that,” said head coach Travis Rasbeary. “Fortunately, the mistakes we made were simple ones, which makes them easier to fix.

“I think every week we are making great strides to becoming the team we are meant to be. We are constantly trying to adapt and get better at our craft.”

The Lady Mustangs have two games remaining on the schedule before opening district play in New Waverly Feb. 11. They battled Liberty on the road Tuesday and will conclude against Hudson and Hempstead.

Rasbeary is high on the team entering district play and what they have been able to accomplish in preparation. The team has had to overcome the departure of last season’s top scorer, Lakin Pennington.

“Our team as a whole this year is better than I have ever seen,” said Rasbeary. “We have had a few girls come in who have completely blown my expectations out of the water. Kayla Basinger made the transition from being a mid-fielder this year to a defender and looks like a seasoned veteran. Brianna Abad has moved out of the goal to play forward for us and has made an instant impact.”

The Lady Mustangs are also fueled by returning players Brinna Sims, Andrea Hinojosa, Mariela Garcia and Diana Rodriguez.

“Right now, my main concern heading into district is whether or not we can carry on things we learn from game to game,” said Rasbeary.

Madisonville’s matchup in Hudson Friday will begin at 6 p.m. They will host Hempstead Feb. 4 to conclude non-district play.
