The Madisonville women’s basketball team fell to 2-3 in district play with a 44-42 loss in Mexia Jan. 28. The team was off Friday before hosting Rusk Tuesday at MHS.

“The team has to make a commitment to finish strong,” said head coach Shana Taylor. “We are not doing a good job on either end of the floor and we certainly have the capacity to be better.”

The Lady Mustangs managed just eight points in the first half of the loss at Mexia before staging a comeback with 34 in the second half. Mexia was able to edge out the slim victory despite being held to single-digits in the third quarter.

Jyah Burns and Daiona Johnson led Madisonville in scoring with 12 points apiece and were followed by Khyra Cooper with 11 and Jerkayla Dickey with seven. Cooper also recorded 13 rebounds in the win and was followed by Tra’Shayla Smith with eight rebounds.

The team’s final two games of the regular season will come against Palestine and Fairfield, who the Lady Mustangs have already beaten this season. Friday’s game at Palestine will be their final road matchup of the year before concluding district at home Feb. 11.
