The Madisonville Lady Mustangs basketball team dropped a contest at MHS Friday by a score of 46-37 to China Spring. It was their first matchup since finishing up their tournament schedule at the Aggieland Invitational during the holiday break.

They concluded their non-district slate Tuesday with another home matchup against Normangee and will begin league play Friday against Mexia.

“Defense is always our primary focus,” said head coach Shana Taylor. “When we truly buy into that concept, we will be a formidable opponent in our district. My goal is one that is attainable, and that is to win district.”

The Lady Mustangs managed just 14 total points in the second and third quarters of the loss to China Spring. Khyra Cooper led the way in scoring for the home squad with 14 points evenly spread throughout the contest. She was followed by nine points from Jyah Burns and five more from Jerkayla Dickey.

The loss brought Madisonville’s overall preseason record to 9-11 entering Tuesday’s home matchup against Normangee. They will remain at MHS to tip off their district slate Friday against Mexia.

Last season, the Lady Mustangs were 0-8 in district play as they will look to rebound in a big way in 2020. Fairfield posted a perfect record of 8-0 to win the district last year and were followed by Rusk, Mexia, Palestine and Madisonville.

After their district opener against Mexia at MHS Friday, the Lady Mustangs will enjoy a scheduled bye on Jan. 14 before hitting the road to take on Rusk on Jan. 17. They will then take on Palestine at home, Fairfield and Mexia on the road before their second scheduled bye date on Jan. 31.

They will conclude the regular season with matchups against Rusk (home, Feb. 4), Palestine (road, Feb. 7) and Fairfield (home, Feb. 11).

The Bi-District playoffs are set to take place Feb. 17-18.
