The Madisonville women’s basketball team fell to 1-1 in district play with a 57-36 loss at Rusk Friday. The loss came after a 54-48 victory over Mexia at MHS to begin district play and a scheduled bye on Jan. 14.

The Lady Mustangs dug themselves a hole early by scoring just 11 total points in the entire first half. They were able to find a rhythm in the second half, but could never make up the early deficit.

Jerkayla Dickey led the team with 10 points and was followed by Khyra Cooper with nine.

“This has been a tough week for the ladies as one of our players suffered a great personal loss,” said head coach Shana Taylor. “This will be another tough week for us as we face two formidable opponents in the district. Defense, as always, is our battlecry.”

Madisonville hosted Palestine at MHS Tuesday and will conclude their first stint of district play in Fairfield Friday. They will then travel to Mexia for a rematch with the Black Cats before their second scheduled bye Jan. 31.
