The Madisonville women’s soccer team picked up three victories as hosts of the Madisonville Lady Mustang Soccer Classic at MHS, including a 2-0 win over Navasota Saturday in the third place matchup.

The team defeated Navasota twice over the weekend as well as Palestine’s JV squad Friday. Their two losses came to Diboll and Liberty, who would battle each other in the championship game Saturday.

“The couple of games that we dropped came against two very good teams,” said head coach Travis Rasbeary after the runner-up matchup Saturday. “It was really just two simple mistakes that I think we fixed in this final match. All in all, I think we did pretty well this weekend.”

Brinna Sims led the way with six total goals in the team’s five games, including two in the third place game Saturday.

Madisonville defeated Navasota 2-1 in their first matchup to open tournament play Thursday. Sims and Brianna Abad supplied the team’s two goals with assists from Mariela Garcia and Maria Ayala.

The Lady Mustangs shutout Palestine JV 4-0 in their first of two games on Saturday morning and afternoon. Sims was responsible for three of the team’s goals, including a penalty kick, while Abad added two assists. Yesenia Aceves also found the back of the net and Garcia added an assist of her own.

“We are definitely starting to click,” said Rasbeary. “We are starting to talk and communicate and everything is coming together, especially for the players that are brand new. They are stepping up and learning from it.”

Later in the day, Diboll delivered Madisonville their first loss of the tournament by a score of 2-1. Despite losing the championship to Liberty, Diboll finished with the most points in the tournament’s scoring system (28).

Abad scored the team’s lone goal in the loss and was assisted by Sims.

The Lady Mustangs fell to Liberty 2-1 Saturday in a game that could have sent them to the championship round. Ayala scored the only goal and was assisted by Sims. The loss sent Madisonville to the third-place game and a rematch against Navasota.

The final point standings from the Lady Mustang Soccer Classic were Diboll (28), Liberty (27), Madisonville (19), Navasota (19), Westwood (8) and Palestine JV (0).

The point system was based off of wins, amount of goals scored and amount of goals allowed.

The Lady Mustangs have now concluded their tournament season and will compete in four standalone matchups before opening district play at New Waverly Feb. 11.

They competed against Livingston at MHS Monday and will travel to Rockdale Friday for a 4:30 p.m. matchup. Other non-league bouts will include Liberty, Hudson and Hempstead.

Madisonville’s first home district game will come Feb. 14 against Westwood at 4:30 p.m.
