Lady Mustangs impress in Centerville

The Madisonville Lady Mustangs basketball team qualified for the gold bracket of a tournament in Centerville over the weekend and came away with wins over Leon and Buffalo.

“I am hoping this tournament will be a motivational tool for the team,” said head coach Shana Taylor. “This was a valiant team effort as our newcomers were fearless and our veterans continue to lead the way.”

Khyra Cooper led the way for Madisonville over the weekend and was named to the All-Tournament team.

“Kudos to (Cooper),” said Taylor. “She played well and seems to have shaken volleyball off and is in basketball form.”

The Lady Mustangs began play with a 49-39 victory over Leon on Thursday. Daija Martin led the way with 16 points and six rebounds for Madisonville while Daiona Johnson added 10 points of her own. Cooper led the team with eight rebounds in the win.

On Thursday night, Madisonville fell to Troy by a score of 50-43. Cooper and Johnson were responsible for most of the scoring production with 20 and 15 points, respectively. Cooper also recorded 10 rebounds to emphasize her big night.

On Friday, the Mustangs edged out Buffalo by a score of 34-33. Cooper led the team in scoring once again with 14 and was followed by Tra’Shayla Smith with 10.

Stats were not recorded on Saturday, but the Mustangs fell to Marlin and Hitchcock after qualifying for the gold bracket.

“We still have many aspects of the game to work on, especially defensively, but I believe this tournament validates this team and our capacity to do great things this year,” said Taylor. “The most valuable attribute that this team possesses is that they never quit playing hard regardless of the scoreboard.”

The Lady Mustangs traveled to Snook on Tuesday and will compete in a tournament at Fairfield over the weekend.
