The Madisonville Lady Mustangs began their district slate with a 54-48 victory over Mexia at MHS Friday after a winless campaign in league play last year. The team was on bye Tuesday and will return to the court in Rusk Friday for their second district matchup.

“The win was big for us because it validates that we are capable of rewriting last year’s history,” said head coach Shana Taylor. “I expect us to be a formidable opponent in district if we stay focused.”

The Lady Mustangs established a lead in the fourth quarter with a three-pointer from Jerkayla Dickey before the Black Cats cut the deficit to two. Baskets from Daiona Johnson and Khyra Cooper down the stretch allowed Madisonville to go up by eight and cruise to a win.

Johnson led the Lady Mustangs in scoring Friday with 17 points and was followed by Cooper with 13. Cooper was also tied for the team lead in rebounds (seven) with Tra’Shayla Smith.

Dickey added 12 points to the mix and also recorded four steals to lead the team.

“If we defend well, it will not really matter who we play in district play,” said Taylor.

Madisonville will take on Rusk, Palestine and Fairfield after the bye before going through the district slate for a second time. Their next and final bye is scheduled for Jan. 31.

The team entered district play on a winning streak after defeating Normangee 59-40 on Jan. 7 at MHS in their last non-league matchup of the season. The Lady Mustangs outscored the Panthers 21-2 in the third quarter of play to run away with the victory.

Cooper’s 24 points and six rebounds led the team in the win. Johnson added eight assists and seven points to compliment a pair of steals. Dickey and Jyah Burns each added six points while Daija Martin added another five. Burns also recorded four rebounds and four assists.

The Lady Mustangs will tip off in Rusk Friday following the junior varsity matchup at 5 p.m. Their next home game will be their third district matchup against Palestine Tuesday at MHS.
