Lady Mustangs prepare for district

The Madisonville Lady Mustangs soccer team concluded their non-district season with a 4-1 victory over Hempstead at MHS Feb. 4. The team enjoyed a scheduled bye Friday before in preparation for the start of district play this week.

“It was definitely a good feeling,” said head coach Travis Rasbeary on finishing the non-league slate on a high note before the long break. “We played a little rough in the first half, but things definitely came together in the second half.”

Brinna Sims scored all four of Madisonville’s goals in the victory over Hempstead. Yesenia Aceves and Jaylen Downard each contributed assists in the effort.

“Overall, we are doing quite well in my opinion,” said Rasbeary on his attitude entering district play. “I scheduled a couple of hard opponents this year because I wanted to see how we would stack up as we push into the playoffs.”

The Lady Mustangs had a whole week to prepare for their district opener in New Waverly after a scheduled bye date Friday.

“This week, we have tried to work a little bit on consistency,” said Rasbeary. “The hardest part of having a week off is keeping yourselves at a consistent level. We are going to hit a little rain this week, so my main concern going into our first district game Friday is making sure the girls are the most prepared they can be, whether it is film, study or on the field in practice.”

Madisonville will take on Westwood at home Friday at 5:30 p.m. They will then travel to Mexia and Crockett before concluding their first stint of district play against Palestine at MHS Feb. 25.
