The Madisonville women’s soccer team improved to 3-0 to start district with a 5-4 shootout victory in Crockett Friday, their second shootout victory to begin district play. The Lady Mustangs returned to MHS to host undefeated Palestine Tuesday.

“It was definitely a nail-biter,” said head coach Travis Rasbeary. “I think the fact that we made it through together and pulled off the win not only solidifies our team, but also gives us the thought that even if we do screw up, our team together is strong enough to pull through and get those wins.”

Brinna Sims scored all three Madisonville goals in regulation with assists from Kayla Basinger, Andrea Hinjosa and Maria Ayala. Shootout goals were scored by Diana Rodriguez and Ayala with Johnna Carroll in the net for the Lady Mustangs.

The team also opened district play with a shootout victory over Westwood Feb. 14 at MHS with goals coming from Sims, Ayala, Hinojosa and Mariela Garcia.

Madisonville blanked Mexia on the road for their second district win Feb. 18 by a score of 2-0 with goals from Sims and Hinojosa. They were assisted by Ayala and Garcia.

“I am definitely impressed with our team’s cohesiveness,” said Rasbeary on the start of district play. “We have had a lot of rainy days, so the fact that we can still go in and get some development done, and my captains and seniors are pushing those new kids to keep fighting, is definitely a great feeling. Those three games in district were hard fought.”

The Lady Mustangs concluded their first stint of district play against Palestine at MHS Tuesday. The Wildcats, who were a perfect 6-0 in district last year, entered the contest with a 3-0 record.

Madisonville will then begin their second stint of district play March 3 with a road matchup at Westwood.
