The Madisonville Lady Mustangs volleyball team picked up a pair of road victories at Normangee on Friday and Teague on Sept. 3 to improve to 15-11 on the non-district season.

“The two wins were big for us,” said Coach Kristen Hooten. “We played pretty good in both games, which is very positive since consistency has been somewhat of an issue this year.”

There was nothing inconsistent about Madisonville’s play away from MHS last week. It took them just three matches to claim victory over both Teague and Normangee with district play less than three weeks away.

The Lady Mustangs beat Teague by scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-21. They defeated Normangee by scores of 25-21, 25-13 and 25-20.

“We have really been focusing on staying strong from start to finish of games and, besides a few minor letdowns during the last couple of matches, I felt like the level of play was higher,” said Hooten. “Winning always build confidence and we have already topped our win total from last year. All of these factors will help us carry momentum and confidence into district play.”

Madisonville’s 15 wins has outdone the 2018 by four games already. Hooten describes the improvement as an all-around team effort from the squad that features a majority of junior players.

The Lady Mustangs have seen clean passing from Sidnie Smith and Kia Moffett to help the setters, Reagan Olvera and Grayson Bennett, run a more efficient offense. Grace Williamson leads the team in kids and is followed by Khyra Cooper.

“This week will definitely be a test with Navasota on Tuesday and Caldwell on Friday,” said Hooten. “A couple of more wins this week would be huge for our confidence heading into district play.”

The game against Navasota took place on Tuesday at home while the matchup with Caldwell will be Jr. High Night and take place at MHS at 4:30 p.m.

District play is set to begin for the Lady Mustangs in Mexia on Sept. 27. Their first home district matchup will come against Palestine on Oct. 1.
