Lady Mustangs take Silver Bracket

Posted

The Madisonville Lady Mustangs soccer team prevailed as champions of the Silver Bracket during the Yoeman Invitational at Cameron over the weekend with victories over Rockdale, Travis and Florence (twice) and a loss to Brentwood Academy.

“We were able to put on a good performance and win the Silver Bracket while missing that key scorer that we had last year,” said head coach Travis Rasbeary. “We are playing a better technical game and executing our formations almost perfectly.”

The new Lady Mustangs will be without the services of last year’s leading scorer Lakin Pennington, who transferred out of the district after her freshman year. Without Pennington, the team is trying to find new ways to consistently put the ball in the net.

“In this tournament alone, we had numerous opportunities on goal,” said Rasbeary. “We are just missing that one little spark to find the net. Once we find that spark, we are going to be one of the best teams on this side of Texas.”

Two of the team’s wins came by way of a coin toss (their first victory over Florence) and a forfeit (their victory over Travis).

On Friday, the Lady Mustangs picked up their first win of the tournament with a 2-0 decision over Rockdale. Brinna Sims drew first blood with a goal on a penalty kick. Maria Ayala also found the back of the net with the help of an assist from Mariela Garcia.

Later in the day, the team defeated Florence by winning a coin toss after their match was tied up at two goals apiece. Brianna Abad scored the first goal off an Ayala assist. Ayala also found the back of the net to tie the game off a Sims assist.

The team then advanced to the Silver Bracket championship game to battle Florence once again after defeating Travis by forfeit.

Madisonville and Florence were both held scoreless in the title game, which was ultimately decided by penalty kicks. The Lady Mustangs prevailed 4-3 with successful attempts from Garcia, Ayala, Abad and Andrea Hinojosa.

The team is scheduled to battle Gatesville on the road Tuesday. The junior varsity game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. with varsity to follow.

“We need to find those holes left by last year’s seniors, and of course (Pennington),” said Rasbeary. “Instead of relying on one person, we have started looking at how we can run our formations better to give everyone an opportunity rather than relying on just one person.”

The Lady Mustangs will begin their district slate Feb. 11 at New Waverly. They are scheduled to host a home tournament at MHS Jan. 16-18.
