Lady Mustangs win in shootout

The Madisonville Lady Mustangs defeated Westwood as a result of a shootout at MHS Friday in their opening matchup of the district season by a score of 4-3.

“I knew what to expect going into Westwood,” said head coach Travis Rasbeary after the win. “We had a chance to watch them several times during the tournament we hosted and knew their style of play. In my opinion, we played a near perfect game with our passes, possession and combination play. The hardest part was just getting it through the multitude of defenders and into the net.”

The Lady Mustangs trailed 1-0 throughout the majority of the contest before a late goal from Brinna Sims evened up the score. This ultimately resulted in a shootout and successful attempts from Sims, Maria Ayala, Mariela Garcia and Andrea Hinojosa. Johnna Carroll was the winning goaltender for Madisonville.

“I think (Friday) showed us what we need to work on,” said Rasbeary. “But looking at how we played all together, I think the team’s confidence is high. We have a good core of seniors that are always optimistic and the rest of the team feeds off that.”

Madisonville’s district opener came after a long break from the field. Before Friday’s victory over Westwood, the team had not played a match in 10 days.

“We spent this past week working on passes and combination play and we are definitely getting there,” said Rasbeary. “I think what we need to focus on moving forward is shooting with the first or second touch of the ball and shooting with a little more confidence.”

The Lady Mustangs traveled to Mexia Tuesday in an attempt to make it 2-0 to begin their district slate. They will remain on the road for another league match against Crockett Friday. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

The team’s next home matchup comes against Palestine Feb. 25.
