Madison County local Jacob Kitson hosted an interest meeting on Friday for his new organization, the Libertarian Party of Madison County, at Rancho Viejo Restaurant in the square.
“People are often a lot more Libertarian than they realize,” said Kitson in the casual atmosphere of the meeting intended to spread the word of the new organization. “We just want people to think for themselves and know what is out there.”
Kitson studied political science at Texas A&M University and has served in the United States Army.
The Libertarian Party was founded in 1971 and is the third largest party in the U.S. It aims to emphasize a commitment to free market principles, civil rights, personal freedom, non-interventionism, pease and free trade.
The group at Rancho Viejo discussed politics in-depth for well over an hour and debated the current state of our nation and how it compares to our roots and the vision of our Founding Fathers.
Kitson voiced his desire to have a Libertarian candidate on the ballet in Madison County by the year 2020. His interest, and the overarching goal of the organization, will be to educate people to the point where they do not feel as if they have to completely identify with the Republican or Democrat parties if they do not have a desire to do so.
“The ideas of people tend to be different and that is one of the greatest gifts we were given,” said Kitson. “We all have our own individual thoughts and the ability to think for ourselves. The trouble starts when others begin to tell you what to think and how to think.”
The meetings are tentative but may take place monthly and on Fridays at the Kimbro Center. Kitson will provide educational material to the attendees at all meetings.
“I will always make sure that information is given and education provided,” said Kitson. “If there is a question and I do not know the answer, I will find someone who does. I will supply the resources necessary for the people to take back our government the way it was intended.”
