The Madisonville Mustangs basketball team defeated Bellville 37-34 in a playoff warmup scrimmage on Friday to prepare for their first playoff game against Carthage at Rusk on Tuesday.

The Bi-District Playoff game against Carthage took place at Rusk High School and the winner advanced to play either Midlothian Heritage or Connally in the Area Round.

“We have spent weeks and watched six different game films of Carthage,” said Madisonville basketball coach Chris Reid before the playoff game. “They are a very athletic and physical team with good size. Their trademark is their 2-3 defense, so we have focused a lot on our zone offense.”

Carthage finished their regular season atop their district with a record of 7-1. Reid stated his team had their best shot at victory if they keep them off of the glass and apply defensive pressure.

The Mustangs qualified for the postseason by finishing fourth in their district with a record of 2-6. They spent much of the non-district slate challenging themselves against highly-touted opponents.
