The Madisonville basketball team was eliminated from the postseason with a 79-49 Bi-District loss to Carthage in Rusk Feb. 25.

“We knew going into the game that we were in for a good challenge against Carthage,” said head coach Chris Reid. “They are a really good program and a well-coached team that won their district. They are so athletic and more physically mature than us. We went in there and I felt like the boys played hard and competed. They gave it a good fight, but we were just kind of outmatched.”

Carthage won their district with a record of 7-1. They were eliminated Friday with a 70-50 loss to China Spring in the Area.

Dylan Stanley led the Mustangs in scoring with 13 points and was followed by Wayne Roundtree with 11 and Armando Juarez with nine. Madisonville played Carthage close in the opening quarter before falling behind in the second.

The Mustangs conclude the season with a record of 8-24 after a fourth place finish in district (2-6).

“There was a lot of instability the first half of the season with some key changes, and that is never easy to deal with,” said Reid. “But I thought the boys adapted and adjusted well. They had a very positive attitude and positive approach to every game. They played hard, never gave up and competed. I am proud of them for that. I definitely think the experience gained by the kids this year will help going forward.”

Madisonville’s varsity roster consisted of seven freshmen or sophomores in 2020. Stanley and Elijah Nauls were the team’s two seniors.
