MCISD teachers win funds for classrooms

Three teachers at Madisonville Intermediate School received a combined $790 for supplies necessary to fund classroom projects through nonprofit DonorsChoose.org in partnership with Sonic Drive-In.

Intermediate teachers Haley Fender (grade three), Missy Allen (grade four) and Tracy Diggs (grade four) each received the highest amount of votes for their individual projects in Sonic’s Limeades for Learning Fall Voting campaign.

“It is a huge blessing that I can provide cool, up-to-date stuff for my kids to use in class,” said Fender, who received funding for her ‘VersaTiles For a Variety of Learners’ project.
Fender has had 15 projects funded through DonorsChoose, allowing her to acquire a number of new products for the classroom.

“All of this technology is very new and not something I had when I was in school,” said Fender. “I love being able to offer those opportunities.”

Both Fender and Allen’s specific projects went toward VersaTiles kits. This tool allows a student to receive instant feedback on their work by placing a set of tiles that represent answers into certain slots. The student can then turn it over to see if their tiles match the proper design.

Allen’s project was titled ‘Building Math Proficiency’.

“I was thrilled,” said Allen, who has also received funding for a number of projects through DonorsChoose in the past. “For us in a small school, it is a great feeling that there are people out there who care to donate and help out your kids.”

Diggs received funding for her ‘Flexible Seating Creates Flexible Learners’ project, which resulted in a number of new seating options for the kids in her class. Her room now has four new Wobble Chairs, which allow the kids to move freely opposed to sitting in a hard chair all day, as well as four floor chairs.

The students take turns using the chairs, but Diggs hopes to acquire more through further projects in the future.

“I was really excited because I had never gotten a project funded before,” said Diggs. “It allows us to provide a little extra for the kids. I really feel blessed that MCISD allows us to use DonorsChoose.”

DonorsChoose.org is the leading platform for giving to public schools. Teachers across America use the site to create projects requesting resources their students need, and donors give to the projects that inspire them.

Since 2009, Sonic has donated $14,538,410, supported more than 17,570 classrooms, and provided necessary learning materials and teaching resources requested by teachers to impact more than 3,745,464 students in partnership with DonorsChoose.

Each funding recipient from Madisonville Intermediate expressed great gratitude toward Sonic and DonorsChoose.org for consistently offering opportunities for progress in the classroom.
