MPD investigates accidental shooting

The Madisonville Police Department continues to investigate a Friday afternoon shooting that is thought to be accidental, as they wait for the victim to recover enough to speak with investigators.

Mark McBride, 16, the victim of the shooting, was life-flighted Friday to CHI St. Joseph Health in Bryan by First Responders. He was reportedly struck in the neck by the bullet and is still recovering in a Houston hospital.

McBride was reportedly accidentally shot by his uncle on Tammye Lane Friday with a long rifle.

Due to the severity of McBride’s injury and his movement to another hospital, Police Chief Herbert Gilbert said MPD investigators had still not had a chance to interview him about the situation as of Monday morning. Therefore, they have not been able to officially close the investigation.

McBride and his family are longtime members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Madisonville. A prayer vigil was held at the church over the weekend for the victim.

“It was very pleasant and very prayerful,” said Father Mark Kusmirek on the vigil. “In fact, (McBride) watched some of it from the hospital via FaceTime. He requested a song; we sang it for him and he smiled when we did. We passed the phone around so everyone could say hello. It was a touching moment.”

The vigil took place on Sunday evening and lasted about an hour and a half. It was attended by family and close family friends.
