The Madisonville High School Boys and Girls track teams had a strong showing at the UIL Region III, 4-A track meet, which was held at Sam Houston State on April 28-29. As a team, the girls finished fourth in the region with 36 points, while the boys team finished in eighth place, with 28 points.
The girl’s 4 x 100-relay team of Garlanesha Gilbert, Mimi Holiday, Tra’dayja Smith and Tyanna Brown, ran a season best time of 48.09, which was good enough for a second place finish, just behind Navasota, whose team ran a 48.04. Then in the 4 x 200 relay, the team of Tra’dayja Smith, Jayah Burns, Garlanesha Gilbert and Tyanna Brown won the regional, and set a new school record, with a time of 1:41.90. Because of their strong finishes in both events, they will move on to the state meet in Austin this weekend, at the University of Texas. The girl’s team also competed in several other events, with Maddie Caperton and Elle Blankenship (both Freshman) competing in the 1600m. Caperton finished in seventh, while Blankenship finished eleventh. In the shot put event, Sha’Kayla Burns placed ninth.
On the boy’s side, the Madisonville 4 x 100-relay team of Kurt Gray, Aaron Nellums, Cornelius Merchant and Johnny Simpson finished fifth, with a time of 43.06. The same four runners also ran the 4 x 200 relay and finished with a season best time of 1:29.19, which placed them in second place and a trip to the state meet in Austin this weekend as well. Johnny Simpson, who ran a spectacular anchor leg of the 4 x 200 relay, also qualified for the state meet in the 200m dash, with a time of 22.17, which was good enough for second. Also competing for Madisonville was Chris Scott, in the shot put event.
Head Coach Russell Urbantke noted, “How proud he was of the young men and women, who worked hard to get where they are, and all that they accomplished”. He also went on to say “thank you to all of the track coaches for all their hard work and dedication with the kids”. Now, it’s on to Austin!
