The Madisonville Mustangs basketball team dropped a pair of non-district matchups over the week including a 58-27 loss to Magnolia and a 91-61 loss to Salado, both on the road. The Mustangs battled Shepherd Tuesday and will compete in a pair of home games before opening district play Jan. 17.

The Mustangs managed just two points in the opening quarter at Magnolia on Dec. 31 and nine total in the first half. Magnolia jumped out to a sizable advantage with a 20-point second quarter and never looked back.

Dylan Standley led the Mustangs in scoring with 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers. He was followed by Armando Juarez with five.

The Madisonville offense had a much better performance in a 91-61 loss to Salado Friday. The team scored 24 points in the third quarter of the loss. They were led in scoring by Xzavier Whaley with 16. Juarez, Standley and Rodney Brooks each recorded 11 points.

Salado posted over 20 points in three of the four quarters to cruise to a 30-point victory.

The Mustangs will compete in a pair of home games to conclude their non-district schedule. They will host Navasota at MHS Friday and Bellville Tuesday.

The team’s first district matchup will come on the road against Rusk on Jan. 17. They will return to MHS to host Palestine Jan. 21.

Madisonville’s other district opponents include Fairfield and Mexia. They will compete against each team twice with the matchups separated by a bye date on Jan. 31.

Palestine won the district with an 8-0 record in 2019 and were followed by Mexia and Fairfield. The Mustangs finished fourth in the district with a 2-6 record while winless Rusk finished last.

Madisonville’s home matchup against Navasota Friday will tip off at MHS at 7:30 p.m.
