Mustangs drop two in district

The Madisonville men’s soccer team fell to 2-2 in district play with a 2-1 loss at Mexia Feb. 18 and a 1-0 loss at Crockett Friday. The Mustangs concluded their first stint of district play with another road matchup in Palestine Tuesday.

“We have played really well in district,” said head coach Baltazar Reyes. “Against Mexia, we just could not find the net. Defensively, we did not defend the right way and that cost us the game. If you create eight to 10 chances to score, you need to put it away.”

In the 2-1 loss at Mexia, Madisonville’s lone goal was scored by Ryan Kinsey and assisted by Emmanuel Guevara. The Mustangs will match up against district opponents New Waverly, Westwood, Mexia, Crockett and Palestine for a second time following their road matchup in Palestine Tuesday.

Since four of their five games during the first stint of district were road matchups, they will conclude with four out of five at MHS during the second stint.

“Defensively, we have been pretty good overall,” said Reyes. “But there are times we are not always in the game. We need to pay attention throughout the whole game.”

Madisonville will host New Waverly at MHS Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. Their final road matchup of the regular season will take place at Westwood March 3.
