Multiple Madisonville Mustangs baseball players were honored with district and state awards over the weekend for their work on and off of the field.
Madisonville’s Colby Sheppard was named the district’s Offensive Player of the Year and Brad Rudis earned Pitcher of the Year. Catcher of the Year was Cody Borgfeld, who is a freshman and took over the starting position at the beginning of the season. All three players will return to rejoin the Mustangs next season.
Brandon Larson was one of four pitchers to be selected to the First Team All-Pitcher category. Max Allen was selected to the same team for his efforts at second base while Danny Young and Dylan Standley were named First Team outfielders and Jordan Baker for utility man. Kody Nye was selected to the district’s Second Team as a first baseman.
“It is good for the kids to be recognized and it shows that the other coaches think highly of them,” said Coach Adam Borgfeld. “All I could do is nominate them but I cannot vote for them. It shows that they are doing a great job. We can build off of these things moving forward.”
A number of Mustangs were also honored for their work in the classroom as well as on the diamond. Allen was a First Team Academic All-State recipient and Baker was selected to the Second Team. Brandon Larson, Jake Risinger and Cameron Carroll were all Honorable Mentions.
“They are doing a good job in the classroom and it makes life a lot easier on the coaches,” said Borgfeld. “We do not have to worry about kids passing because they are doing their jobs in the classroom. I was proud to see those guys who got academic all-state and we had more for academic district. We had a lot not far from the cutoff. Our kids do a real good job in the classroom and it shows.”
Earning academic all-district honors for the Mustangs are Asa Surface, Brad Rudis, Colby Sheppard, Brandon Larson, Max Allen, Jordan Baker, Kody Nye, Cameron Carroll, Jake Risinger and Dylan Stanley.
