The Madisonville soccer team picked up wins over El Campo and Brazosport to advance to the Regional Semifinals against Hargrave on Friday at A&M Consolidated High School.
“I’m very proud of the boys for stepping up and being able to defend our score for a 1-0 win,” said Madisonville soccer coach Baltazar Reyes after Friday’s win over Brazosport in Sealy. “That was a tough opponent and we needed great defense to stop them. We need to keep that intensity up and keep communicating while we take it one game at a time.”
Goaltenders Guillermo Rosas and Jesus Martinez were unstoppable in the 1-0 victory over Brazosport and kept the Exporters from tying the game down the stretch. Rosas played the first half and Martinex played the second. This was Madisonville’s first shutout since March 9 against Navasota and their 13th on the season overall. Luis Aceves scored the game’s only goal and was assisted by Mauricio Aceves. The victory puts the Mustangs just two wins from the 4A Regions 1 and 3 state championship game.
Last Tuesday, Madisonville easily took care of El Campo 8-3 in the Area round to qualify for the matchup with Brazosport. It was an all out team assault for the Mustangs who saw seven separate players find the back of the net in the one-sided contest. David Parras led the way with two goals and Mauricio Aceves, Jose Ibarra, Dixon Veliz, Luis Aceves, Bayron Veliz and Jesus Martinez each tacked on one each as well. Dixon and Bayron Veliz also added an assist each while Parras recorded three and Diego Guevara two.
Madisonville proved in the early rounds and throughout most of the regular season just how dominant they could be with blowout finishes. Now, they’re showing that they can outlast the best competition in the state.
“The boys are mentally and physically focused with all of the energy in the world,” said Reyes. “I always remind them to never let their guards down and try to limit mistakes on both sides of the ball at this stage because just one could cost you a season.”
The Mustangs will battle the Hargrave Falcons at A&M Consolidated High School on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Falcons needed penalty kicks to get by Bob Hope and advance to this round. The winner will face either Center or Stafford at 10 a.m. on Saturday with a trip to the championship on the line.
