Mustangs prepare for Friday opener

The Madisonville football team hosted a scrimmage with Cameron Thursday in preparation for Friday’s season opener against Diboll, which will come with a new twist.

Team officials announced Tuesday that Friday night’s contest will be moved from Diboll to Mustang Stadium due to expected inclement weather.

Each level of Madisonville football competed in Thursday’s “Our Day to Shine” scrimmage at MHS, which raised $540 for the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation (THSCEF) Benevolence Fund.

The exhibition matchup also gave coaches a chance to view a slew of varsity newcomers in a competitive atmosphere.

“We were really excited about the way the team performed on both sides of the ball,” said head coach Russell Urbantke. “With all of the young, Inexperienced kids we have in different spots, we felt like we did some really good things.”

Madisonville saw significant action from a number of the backs that will drive their running game in 2020 beside quarterback Armando Juarez.

“We rotated four different (running backs) back there every two or three plays,” said Urbantke. “Those guys ran the ball really well. Something we are emphasizing this week getting ready for Diboll is our ball security. Across the board, we felt like we did not protect the ball very well.”

Madisonville backs included Ronnie Mosley, Patrick Brazzell, Jeremiah Burns and Blessing Ngene. They ran behind an offensive line that featured a number of players garnering their first varsity experience beside senior leader Cade Colwell at center, including sophomores Cutter Smith, Armando Polanco and David Guevara.

On the defensive side, the unit’s strength was adamant and expected.

“Our front seven looked really good,” said Urbantke. “Jace Snook and Andres Lopez picked up where they left off last year at the inside linebacker spot. We dropped Ronaldo Willis down to defensive line and I thought he did some really good things last week.”

The team’s front seven will also feature Brazzell at outside linebacker and Jertavius Brown as the sole returning starter on the defensive line.

The Mustangs will gear up to start the season against a physical group and a versatile backfield in the Diboll Lumberjacks, who won 11 games and advanced to the Area playoffs in 3A last season.

“We are fixing to play a very physical football team,” said Urbantke. “We are going to get tested real quick. As far as us attacking them, I think we have found a couple things offensively that we do to matchup well with them.”

The Lady Mustangs’ Friday volleyball game against Diboll has also been moved to MHS and all Thursday contests between the schools have been canceled. Tickets for each contest can be purchased through links posted to the Madisonville Meteor Facebook and Twitter pages.

Any tickets purchased through the links will still be accepted at MHS despite the change of venue. Tickets cannot be purchased at the gate.
