Mustangs prepare for homecoming

CROCKETT — Madisonville improved to 4-0 to start the season and now welcome Lorena to Mustang Stadium for homecoming at 7:30.

In a 59-21 road win over Crockett, the Mustangs could not be stopped on the ground and came up with timely defensive efforts to pull out their fourth straight in blowout fashion. Four Madisonville back rushed for at least 50 yards in the win. Merchant and Moffett recorded well over 100 apiece and the group accounted for all 8 touchdowns.

“Anytime you run the ball that effectively, your chances of winning will skyrocket in my experience,” said Mustangs head coach Rusty Nail. “I’ve lost games with over 500 passing yards but never 500 rushing yards.”

Madisonville didn’t just control the game on the ground. Randall Cherry’s helped win the turnover ratio for the fourth straight week while another impressive performance from Mauricio Aceves afforded Mustang domination in the battle for field positioning.

“We talk about field position and turnovers constantly,” said Nail. “We even present a weekly slideshow and set goals based on winning these aspects in every single game that we play.”

Those aspects as well as another impressive rushing attack will be called for again on Friday night. Coach Nail praised Lorena’s coaching staff and knows they’re not going to beat themselves with mistakes.

“Lorena is a program steeped in success and deep playoff runs,” said Nail. “In my opinion, Coach Ray Biles is one of, if not the best, high school coaches in Texas. His staff has been with him for many years and they’re a program, not just a team.”

Lorena can also run the ball effectively and will try a lot of different formations to try and confuse the Madisonville defense. Nail touched on the similarities between these two coaching staffs, as some have worked together at different schools prior to this season.

“We continue to talk about how to handle success and how to execute a championship week from Monday through Saturday,” said Nail. “In order to avoid a letdown on homecoming, we have to show up, be focused and work hard everyday. We’re prepared for a big challenge on Friday. Win or lose, Lorena will make us better.”
