Mustangs prepare for playoffs

The Madisonville Mustangs soccer team picked up their second victory of the season over Crockett last Tuesday by a score of 7-0 before concluding district play against top-ranked Palestine.

“I would like for them to be more coordinated and actually put goals away without missing too many,” said Coach Baltizar Reyes when asked what his team needs to improve before the postseason begins.

The win put Madisonville’s district record at 6-3 before Tuesday’s finale on the road against undefeated Palestine.

Mauricio Aceves and Sammy Acosta led the way in scoring for the Mustangs with three goals apiece. Aceves recorded the first two goals of the contest and added three assists along the way. Keven Martinez also found the back of the net while Juan Polanco and Jose Torres picked up assists in the shutout win.

The Mustangs also defeated the Bulldogs by a score of 7-3 in their first meeting at MHS on Feb. 22.

Tuesday’s season finale in Palestine was a chance for Madisonville to avenge a 9-0 loss to the Wildcats at MHS on Feb. 26. Regardless, the Mustangs are locked into the third place slot in the district standings in their first year after the realignment. They also dropped two tightly contested matches to Mexia on Feb. 19 and March 8.

Reyes viewed the rematch against the Wildcats as a chance to prepare for the postseason and believes the team has confidence at the right time of the year. Palestine entered the matchup with a 20-0-2 record on the season.

The Mustangs will enter the postseason after last year’s run took them all the way to the state tournament against San Elizario. The current squad is extremely battle tested heading into the tournament.

Madisonville hosted their final game at MHS on March 5 and their playoff matchups will take place at neutral sites.
