Mustangs prepare for playoffs

The Madisonville Mustangs soccer team concluded their regular season with a 6-0 loss to Palestine on the road and will enter the postseason with a Bi-District matchup against Waco La Vega on Friday after last season’s run to the state tournament.

“I learned that at this point it is critical for our team to take advantage of the opportunities that are given by the other team,” said Coach Baltizar Reyes, who found out what it takes to lead a team on an extended playoff run in 2018. “You need to be focused throughout the entirety of each matchup.”

While this year’s regular season accolades may not have been quite as impressive as last year’s, Madisonville battled a stronger district and faced more advanced opponents throughout their preseason.

The loss to Palestine gave the Mustangs a final record of 6-4 in district play, good for third behind top-ranked Palestine (10-0) and Mexia (9-2). They finished ahead of Crockett, New Waverly and Westwood. All four losses came to Palestine and Mexia, but the Mustangs fell by just one goal in two of those contests.

In the first matchup against Palestine at MHS, the Mustangs fell to the Wildcats by a score of 9-0. They held the Wildcats to six goals the second time around on Friday but could not find the back of the net themselves.

“We played a lot better but made crucial mistakes that allowed (Palestine) to have an advantage and score,” said Reyes on the district finale. “It helped us a lot because we were able to fix the mistakes we made. We know that in the playoffs you cannot make any mistakes if you want to keep advancing.”

In order to make another run this time around, Reyes stated that his Mustangs must play smart and take advantages of the opportunities that are created.

The Mustangs will travel to Rockdale on Friday to battle La Vega at 5:30 p.m. The Pirates completed their district slate with a record of 12-2, which was good for second place.
