Mustangs prepare for playoffs

The Madisonville basketball team dropped their last two district matchups of the season to conclude play with a record of 2-6. They will compete in a playoff warmup game Friday before taking on Carthage in the Bi-District playoffs early next week.

The losses came to Fairfield Feb. 11 by a score of 52-44 and Mexia during Friday’s Senior Night matchup by a score of 77-58. The team honored seniors Dylan Stanley and Elijah Nauls on the court with their families before the game.

“(Stanley and Nauls) are high-character kids, hard workers and team players,” said head coach Chris Reid on the seniors. “We are going to miss them. Everybody knows what senior night is and I could tell it was a little emotional, the finality of it, but they took it all in stride and stepped out on the court and played hard as always.”

Wayne Roundtree led the team in scoring with 13 points in the loss and was followed by Stanley with 11, Xzavier Whaley with nine, Armando Juarez with eight and Joshua Griffin with seven.

Madisonville fell behind 21-10 after the first quarter of play and were never able to fight their way back despite 35 combined points in the second and third quarters of play.

The team will travel to Ennis for a playoff warmup game Friday and take on Carthage in the Bi-District round either Monday or Tuesday. The specific details for the matchup against Carthage had not been finalized at the time of this writing.

“We have started to gel as a team lately and are really starting to focus in on some areas of improvement,” said Reid. “I like our chances against Carthage. I think we are hitting the right cylinders at the right time, but we still need to focus on little things like making layups, free throws and things of that nature.”

Carthage is coming off a 4A Region III District 20 Championship.
