Mustangs prepare for season opener

Posted

All levels of the Madisonville football team participated in a scrimmage at Lexington on Thursday in preparation for their season opener at Bellville on Aug. 30. The Mustangs will also travel to Cameron on Thursday to compete in another preseason scrimmage.

“I was pleased with the effort all the way around,” said head coach Russell Urbantke on his team’s performance. “That was my big deal and they were flying around to the football and getting after it.”

The Varsity team went up against Lexington in the exhibition matchup along with the JV Red and JV Blue squads.

The Mustangs have been in the full swing of practice as the players begin the new school year. Urbantke has state in the past that the scrimmages are solely for the benefit of their own playbook and they do not extensively game plan for the opponents. The teams do not typically keep score during a preseason scrimmage.

“We saw some really good things,” said Urbantke. “Both lines played well and our skilled players played well, it was a really good scrimmage. The main thing is that we came out healthy and did not lose anyone to a scrimmage.”

The Mustangs, like all teams in the state of Texas, have been battling the extreme weather as the season approaches. However, the players have embraced the opportunity to work and improve despite the conditions.

“In my 19 years of coaching, (last Monday) ranked up there as one of the hottest days I have ever been out on the field,” said Urbantke following the particularly hot week of practices. “It was tough, but the kids were responding really well. We were in full pads and it was the best practice we have had yet.”

All three levels of Madisonville football will take the field for another exhibition match against Cameron on the road Thursday. The action will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Yoe Field in Cameron.

The regular season opener for the Mustangs will take place in Bellville at 7:30 p.m. Madisonville will not host their first regular season matchup until they welcome Caldwell to Mustang Stadium on Sept. 13.
