Mustangs recognized for academics

Six players and three trainers from Madisonville High School were either selected to the Texas High School Coaches Association’s (THSCA) Academic All-State Football Teams or singled out as Honorable Mentions.

Those players and trainers recognized within the program included Asa Surface (First Team), Alyssa Nail (Second Team), Austin Longoria (Second Team), Colby Sheppard (Second Team), Dakota Koym (Honorable Mention), Ethan Booker (Honorable Mention), Madison Jackson (Honorable Mention), Nathan Chappell (Honorable Mention) and Tyrese Brown (Honorable Mention).

“I am very proud of the student-athletes that have achieved this award,” said head football coach Russell Urbantke. “They have worked hard to maintain their GPA through their years in high school and have done well on the SAT or ACT. We talk to our athletes all the time about being great in the classroom and this group of seniors set a great example of what a student-athlete should be.”

The teams are selected by a point system that awards points for GPA, class rank and SAT or ACT score. The students are then placed on teams according to the number of points they have compiled.

There are 3,457 student-athletes that made the Academic All-State football team. To view the complete list of recipients, visit www.THSCA.com.
