The Madisonville Mustangs soccer team began district play with two convincing victories over New Waverly by a score of 8-0 and Westwood by a score of 10-0.

The Mustangs entered district play with a record of 7-5 and experience against a number of high quality teams. Coach Baltizar Reyes believes the team's non-district slate helped them get off to the right start.

“It has given the team confidence to have a hot start in district play,” said Reyes. “We just have to keep on communicating better and limiting our mistakes.”

Madisonville’s district opener against New Waverly came at home last Tuesday and was led by three goals apiece from Maurcio Aceves and Ryan Kinsey. Aceves, who logged the first two goals of the game, was assisted by Alan Torres, Vladimir Morales and Dixon Veliz. Kinsey’s goals were assisted by Morales, Kevin Flores and Jose Torres.

Aceves would also assist a Johnny Silva goal and Dixon Veliz capitalized on an assist from Sammy Acosta in the shutout victory.

Aceves again found the back of the net twice to give Madisonville a 2-0 advantage over Westwood on Friday night. Both of his goals were assisted by Veliz, who would then score back-to-back goals himself with assists from Aceves and Morales to put the Mustangs up 4-0.

Juan Torres would be the third Mustang to record two goals in the game while Acosta, Jose Torres, Jovany Silva and Juan Gonzalez found the back of the net as well. Veliz, Aceves and Morales all had two assists while Gabriel Aceves, Franklin Coronado and Kevin Flores each added one.

The Mustangs looked for their third straight win to start district play at MHS on Tuesday night against Mexia. It was the first of three straight games the Mustangs will host. They will battle Crockett at MHS on Friday at 5:30 p.m. before welcoming Palestine.
