Mustangs to scrimmage for a cause

The Madisonville baseball team’s “Our Day to Shine” scrimmage Friday at MHS against the Caldwell Hornets will benefit the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation (THSCEF) Benevolence Fund.

The THSCEF Benevolence Fund was established by the Texas High School Coaches Association Board of Directors to assist athletes and coaches experiencing hardships. To date, over 900 schools have participated in “Our Day to Shine” and have raised over $614 thousand.

“You never know when one of your athletes or yourself may need some extra help,” said head coach Adam Borgfeld. “I just want to teach these kids that we have to help each other and the community that we live in.”

Entrance to Friday’s scrimmage will be free with the option of donating to the cause at the gate. The junior varsity game will begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity scrimmage at 7 p.m.

The fund has primarily been active during football season. Madisonville has hosted “Our Day to Shine” scrimmages at Mustang Stadium in the past. It has been added to baseball scrimmages in an effort to get more sports involved in the fundraising.

The Madisonville baseball team will also benefit a local food pantry at a later point in the season, as they did in 2019.

“The community takes care of us, so we need to pay them back and help in any way we can,” said Borgfeld. “I try to teach these young guys that lesson early on and hopefully that can help it stay instilled forever.”

The Madisonville baseball team will compete in a number of preseason scrimmages before opening their non-district season against Malakoff at MHS Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
