New smoke shop burglarized

After opening its doors to the public less than a month ago, the Madisonville Smoke Shop was burglarized late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. The burglar (or burglars) emptied the cash register, which contained more than $500, and also stole various items from the new shop.

All told, owner Bob Rana estimates the thief or thieves made out with well over $1,000 worth of cash and merchandise.

“We lost $500 from the register and some merchandise,” said Rana. “I have not calculated how much (worth of stolen merchandise), but I am pretty sure it is in the thousands.”

Among the stolen items included water pipes, electronic smoking devices, or vaping devices, oil burners and cigars.

“It is just not good for Madisonville,” said Rana, who has been in touch with the Madisonville Police Department regarding the incident and gave his permission to pursue charges. “Especially because we are a new business. The city needs to be safe.”

Rana was in the process of installing video cameras at the establishment, but no such cameras were present at the time of the burglary.

Employee Rachel Loa, who opened the shop at 9 a.m. Sunday, stumbled onto the scene.

“I just walked through the door and saw the cash register open and all the money was missing,” said Loa. “There were a couple things on the floor and some other stuff was missing, too.”

It is believed that the burglar or burglars broke through a boarded up window to gain entry to the shop and exited through the back door, which they found open Sunday.
